May 6, 1983: Cowrock Mountain was the star of the show today, with many views from the open, rocky ledges and terraces around the summit. There were more great views of that maze of mountains and narrow valleys threading west and northwest towards the Western fork of the Blue Ridge.
This tree at the trailhead and the entire trail is dedicated to a local landowner who died young from leukemia in 1993. I took several pictures of the tree from different distances and angles, and liked this one the best even though it only shows the core third of the tree. I should come back in a few months when it's filled out.
The Cupertino end of the same line, near the level crossing at Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road. This segment is also paralleled by an urban trail, but it's considerably older, presumably dating back to when the line was in regular use: there's a fence, No Trespassing signs, and some distance from the line. Debris in the mud suggests there might have been a passing track, storage line, or spur here long ago. Safe bet those houses are much newer.

May 5, 1983: It was a comparatively gentle climb for the most part, but I have a long way to go before my body is truly ready for this adventure. The day was sunny and hot, and I ran out of water about halfway through the climb. June 29, 1983: The remainder of the trail was densely wooded, generally lacking in viewpoints. That was of little consequence today. The cold rain intensified and lingered into the night. Rain makes for a much more introverted hiking experience than on a clear day. Far-off vistas disappear and distant colors are muted into shades of gray.

July 9, 1983: The first seven miles of trail were another game of lost-in-the-woods. When it was over, I sat down to rest for ten minutes on a rock beside the trail. Five minutes after resuming my hike, I passed a park bench in the middle of a clearing surrounded by a pleasant forest grove. I wished this spot had been mentioned in my guidebook.
All told, the city is considering $27 million worth of trails, paths and greenways, totaling 32 miles.
This would be very good for Tucker. Right now Tucker feels to me as if they have accommodated cars at every turn: multi-lane stroads, strip malls, and large lots. And all of that has caused awful traffic. Alternative ways to get around would help.

May 3, 1983: At a spot called Three Forks, four miles from Springer Mountain, the crossed a fire road beside the convergence of three streams which had become raging torrents. A blinding mass of rain was creating a surreal, semi-aquatic woodland.

June 6, 1983: West of the Blue Ridge, the mountains over which I am now hiking are a big change from those I had traversed up until now. These are long folds in the land stretching for miles. Their ridge crests tend to be heavily wooded, with nothing resembling a summit peak to break up their flat-topped profiles just an occasional wind or water gap cutting through.

September 6, 1983: I have always been fond of South Twin. At 4902 feet, it is one of the loftier summits in New Hampshire, and the ridge crest has an extensive alpine zone. It is somewhat more remote from roads than Franconia Ridge, and thus, one can usually find an escape from the hordes of hikers swarming Franconias summits. Today was no exception.

May 18, 1983: Derrick Knob shelter was in an excellent spot, similar in appearance to Russell Field. About a dozen small deer were wandering around nibbling the grass and the lower leaves, and they let me approach surprisingly close.
Good hiking on the mountain this afternoon. Nice warm sunny day. T-shirt weather!

May 18, 1983: A lot of ups and downs along a rolling stretch of ridge crest brought us to Russell Field Shelter a beautiful spot. Years ago, before these mountains became a national park, folks used to farm their ridgetops.

July 10, 1983: Shortly afterward, the trail left the road, went into the woods, and entered West Virginia. The last few miles of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia drifted back and forth across its state line with West Virginia. The trail for the most part was on rocky old woods roads.

June 5, 1983: Although the hiking was rather easy from that point on, the woods continued to be very buggy. The heat and humidity of the day were slow to abate as the afternoon wore on. The Appalachian Trail followed the ridge with no major climbs or descents to Vanderventer Shelter. It was 5:00 when I arrived.

August 13, 1983: The Appalachian Trail went into Dark Entry Ravine, ascending through the perpetual twilight silence of an old hemlock forest. Long years of decomposing fallen needles had buried the boulder-strewn ground and transformed it into a soft, lumpy carpet. It was lovely, even though the stream was barely running.
