Good day!
We seem to be settling into a seasonal weather pattern, which is far better than the epic heat weve suffered the last few years.
I dont fear August heat here like I do July heat. The days are shorter. It takes until afternoon to heat up.

Good day!
All of nature is magical, but often I find those special places many overlook.
The castle ruins on the mountaintop.
The secret door in the tree.
The clearing in the forest where magic still lingers.
The gold that grows where the magic is strongest.

A view from early in my last hike, about the time the drizzle stopped.
Id ignored the weather forecast because the temperature was ideal, upper 60s (+19C). It stayed that cool, too.
Yet, even after my big day, I returned home & finished editing a chapter.

Okay, heres the complete experience. Even when the stream was far below me, it was still loud.
This video shows you why.
This was one of those hikes where its impossible to see everything.
The Bitterroot Mountains never, ever disappoint. I also didnt see anyone until on the way back.

Good day!
What was really strange while hiking was how often I had really tiny streams running along the side of the old forest road on the opposite side from the larger stream.
Water stereo.
Eventually, each little stream would cross the road to join the larger one.
What a joy.

Good day!
It drizzled on me to start yesterday. I paralleled this creek & listened to it all the way to my destination.
It was quite a hardship.
Thanks to the canyons echo, the sound never faded completely.
Ill always remember this as the hike when I finally mastered trekking poles. It helped.

Good day!
Ive been reveling in the cool summer weve had here (so far).
Truth is, it isnt unusually cool. This is normal. Weve had unusually hot summers for years. Spring was unusually warm.
The drought remains. It rains, but its brief, & usually its drizzle.

Recently hiking in central Europe, we found that the OpenStreetMap data using the OrganicMaps app ( ) and now CoMaps ( ) much more useful than Google Maps. The location of available water was especially appreciated during the last heatwave!

While compiling this list, I found myself rather shocked to discover that Bill Brysons book about the Appalachian Trail was my least favorite book among these completed. He has long been one of my favorite authors, but somehow A Walk in the Woods did not resonate with me as much as the other books in this list.
Nevertheless there are many great hiking adventures out there to read about. the list below includes the Appalachian Trail (2 books), Colorado Trail, Continental Divide Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and the Great Silk Road (3 books). Needless to say, there are many others that I have yet to discover.
If there are such books that you have read and loved, please pass them along. I always enjoy a memorable hiking adventure. Similar lists will be posted over time for published boating, sailing, motor vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle/scooter, train, plane, and mixed travel mode adventures.
Happy trails and Peace!

Good day!
Its supposed to be rainy all day. We might get up to 72F (22C), but itll depend on how the clouds interact with the mountains. It tends to be unpredictable.
Im considering an in town photo adventure. The weather is right for it & I need a change.

I was trying to capture an image of the fungal fruiting body inside the hollow there, but it appears to me now that what I really captured was a skull-like face in the tree
Only managed 6 miles tonight on my new fairly hilly regular route. Found halfway through the ride that my front breaks were dragging and had to adjust them on the fly! For how trash I feel about the short distance I rode, I'm super stoked that I made it all the way up the super steep hill on the gravel portion of the ride for the first time!
Also bonus storm damage along the gravel trail portion:
