Natures bounty,
often called public lands,
parks and places
where you can find your soul,
a refuge where troubles are dismissed.
Wild blessings,
for one and all,
but when theyre gone
theyre in greeds clutches,
our public birthright traded for a song.

Good day!
Ive been reveling in the cool summer weve had here (so far).
Truth is, it isnt unusually cool. This is normal. Weve had unusually hot summers for years. Spring was unusually warm.
The drought remains. It rains, but its brief, & usually its drizzle.

Recently hiking in central Europe, we found that the OpenStreetMap data using the OrganicMaps app ( ) and now CoMaps ( ) much more useful than Google Maps. The location of available water was especially appreciated during the last heatwave!
Da wohl langsam stirbt, hab ich mal angefangen fr meine Gegend ein paar empfehlenswerte Touren auf zu erfassen. Vielleicht ergnze ich dort auch noch das ein oder andere Photos ...

*Full disclosure. Yes, I did bend this tree before I took the picture.
Okay, maybe not.
I survived my doc appt, & remain alive & human, despite what some may believe.
In truth, for my age (66), Im astoundingly healthy. So much of that is hiking.

Good day!
I went on a 7-mile (11K) photography jaunt yesterday, taking the Milwaukee Trail to the university campus. I needed to clear my head.
Here are the less abstract images.
This morning, I have a worthless Medicare appointment early. I need to walk right away.

While compiling this list, I found myself rather shocked to discover that Bill Brysons book about the Appalachian Trail was my least favorite book among these completed. He has long been one of my favorite authors, but somehow A Walk in the Woods did not resonate with me as much as the other books in this list.
Nevertheless there are many great hiking adventures out there to read about. the list below includes the Appalachian Trail (2 books), Colorado Trail, Continental Divide Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and the Great Silk Road (3 books). Needless to say, there are many others that I have yet to discover.
If there are such books that you have read and loved, please pass them along. I always enjoy a memorable hiking adventure. Similar lists will be posted over time for published boating, sailing, motor vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle/scooter, train, plane, and mixed travel mode adventures.
Happy trails and Peace!

Good day!
Its supposed to be rainy all day. We might get up to 72F (22C), but itll depend on how the clouds interact with the mountains. It tends to be unpredictable.
Im considering an in town photo adventure. The weather is right for it & I need a change.

TrailsI was trying to capture an image of the fungal fruiting body inside the hollow there, but it appears to me now that what I really captured was a skull-like face in the tree
Only managed 6 miles tonight on my new fairly hilly regular route. Found halfway through the ride that my front breaks were dragging and had to adjust them on the fly! For how trash I feel about the short distance I rode, I'm super stoked that I made it all the way up the super steep hill on the gravel portion of the ride for the first time!
Also bonus storm damage along the gravel trail portion:

I took this image minutes before seeing my 1st Montana rabbit. Theyre elusive here, apparently.
In Wyoming they were everywhere.
Forest roads are interesting here. Some are used, like this one. Some are purely for hiking now. Some are completely abandoned.

I went exploring, but before reaching University Peak, I ascended its unnamed, but higher, neighbor with a facility.
It was mild & muggy at the trailhead. Up top, the frigid wind howled & my hands numbed.
It was deserted. No bodies. No screams. Great views.

Were having mildly hot days with cool nights and no rain. I walk each morning, then spend my days editing. Not very exciting.
All that changes is if I hike, which I try to schedule around posting to the blog & the weekends when people clog the local trails.

Meanwhile, my editing pace has been astonishing, but I need to take a break for a hike soon before I crash.

Hints of autumn. If I hike high enough & pay attention, multiple seasons coexist (like the snow last month).
Like how I coexist in 2 worlds as a writer. Sometimes, Im reminded of how Im more familiar with the one I created.

Good day!
I love hiking when there are clouds.
They change the landscape beneath them with shadows that roam.
I like to roam, which means theyre the kind of shadows I want walking with me.
And leaving the other shadows in my life behind is why I hike.
